How To Tile

Types of Tiles

It is important to know which types of tile are suitable for your tiling project. This will depend on the room you are tiling, and the usage it gets, and whether you are tiling walls or a floor etc. Tiles come in a wide variety of sizes, colours and materials including ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, natural stone tiles as well as mosaic tiles. Each one has different characteristics. To help you decide which type of tile is best for you, we have put together a Choosing your tiles guide.

Number of tiles needed

Once you’ve decided on the tile or tiles you want, you’ll need to calculate the number of tiles you’ll need. Do this by:

  1. Measure in metres,  the height and width of each area to be tiled
  2. Multiply the height and width of each area to calculate the square metres of each area
  3. Add each area together for the overall square metres of your room
The number of tiles per square metre will obviously depend on the size of the tile. If you are buying your tiles in a Tile Depot store, our staff will help you work out the number of tiles required. If you are buying from our website, try our extremely useful tile calculator on each product to work it out for you.
Tiles are produced in batches, so it’s important to make sure you buy enough tiles from the same batch. We suggest you allow 10% extra for breakages, wastage and any future use. Any unused tiles stocked in Tile Depot can always be returned to any store within 28 days of purchase for a refund.
